Monday, November 16, 2009 - Tuesday November 17, 2009 marks the start of the 110th year of the Greenwood Fire Department.
In the attic of a home in the State of Wyoming the first recorded minutes of the Greenwood Hose Co. No. 1 were found. No one is sure how these documents arrived at this location, however, when they were found, the owners contacted one of our members. According to the first minute book, the first meeting to organize a "Hose Company" was conducted on November 17, 1899. On that night 110 years ago, the citizens of the Village of Greenwood met at the No. 2 School House (the current location of the fire station) and selected a chairman and secretary. All fourteen people present were enrolled as the founding members.
Ironically, the first meeting was held at the #2 School House. The Fire Department was organized and housed 2 blocks north of this location at 3528 Birney Ave. In 1978, some 79 years after the original meeting, the Fire Station would be moved to the former location of the #2 School House.
December 15, 1899 - The Trustees of the newly formed Greenwood Hose Company 1 purchased the organizations first firefighting apparatus - a used hand pulled hose cart. This cart was purchased for the grand sum of $10.00 from the Neptune Engine Co. 2 of the City of Scranton. The members immediately started repairs on the cart to get it ready for the newly ordered hose and nozzle. Also, a committee of members were actively working with the Springbrook Water Company to get five hydrants installed throughout the growing village. These concerned citizens laid the foundation of a great organization that continues to serve 110 years later.
Although we have some written history, we do not have any photos of our apparatus for the first 40-years of our operation. If anyone from the community can add to our earliest history, we would be extremely grateful. Please contact the firehouse at 570-961-9454.
